The Proper Table was born during the COVID-19 pandemic. As two wedding industry pros (more on that later), we were inspired to create something exciting and positive to help our local industry, which was affected in such a dramatic way. We wanted to spread the love, and spearhead the return of the dinner party! Since then, thanks to the support of this amazing community, The Proper Table has grown beyond our wildest expectations. Here’s a closer look at what we do!
Rentals
Do you have an upcoming anniversary? Brunch? Dinner party? Tuesday? The Proper Table is here to take the stress off your plate. From carefully curated table settings to add-ons including gourmet food, tasty libations, and beautiful blooms, we do it all so you can just sit back and enjoy the party.
The Proper Table experience begins with the selection of your table setting, which includes plates, flatware, linens, and candles; for those looking to elevate their tables, flowers are available too. If you don’t feel like cooking, choose from one of The Proper Table’s delicious three course menus, and consider adding dessert and cocktails! You can even add a polaroid camera and film to capture the evening. Everything is dropped off at your door in Victoria, BC with instructions. The best part? After dinner, you just put the dirty dishes back in the box to be picked up the next day.
The Proper Table is also the home of The Supper Series, a series of culinary journeys inspired by a new global destination every month, with food, decor, and cocktails delivered to your door.
The Shop
Our new storefront in Estevan Village—shared with local boutique Leisure—is a one-stop shop for all your entertainment needs. The store features a curated collection of tabletop decor, textiles, flatware and more, with expert party planners on-site to offer advice and insight into setting a proper table and selecting everything you need for a night of entertaining. The Proper Table will also host regular live, in-store events including cocktail mixology, napkin folding, and calligraphy. Whether you’re stopping by to find the perfect mood-setting decor, or to get expert advice, or to pick up a hostess gift on your way to the party (we’ll even gift wrap it for you!), the storefront is an immersive experience you won’t want to miss.

The faces behind the table.
So, who are we? Barb Walker of French Kiss Events and Shara Jawl from Bash Specialty Rentals. We met 6 years ago through the Victoria wedding industry, and became fast friends. Weekly walks with our babies, shopping trips, obsessive talk over napkins and lots of glasses of rosé...just to give you a glimpse into our friendship.
Barb started French Kiss Events, a boutique wedding planning company, back in 2010, and has since been featured in multiple publications, including Vogue as part of their Top 5 Wedding Planners in Canada. Her reputation as someone who will deliver you a flawless event is unmatched in the city and believe us when we tell you that she knows how to create the perfect dinner party. When not planning events, she loves to enjoy a big cup of coffee (or wine) at home with hubby Nick and daughter Maddie. And in an alternate life, they’d all live in Maui...obviously ;)
Shara has had an obsession with chairs from a very young age. She has also loved to host and throw parties since high school ;) In 2014, she combined these two hobbies and formed Bash Specialty - a unique and vintage furniture rental company in Victoria, BC. Since then she has been beautifying spaces all over BC. A shopping trip to Seattle with Barb solidified their friendship. In 2020, they started The Proper Table so the party could continue when people needed it most!
Shara has studied Interior and Architectural design through Parsons The New School New York and Paris. She has a double major in Philosophy and Political Science from Indiana University. She is lovingly supported by many but especially by her husband, Rob, and two boys, Wilder and Miller, who still get excited when she brings home a new chair.
